Step 1. The teacher provides a description of the term.


Build on direct experiences, such as field trip or a guest speaker, that provides examples of the term:
Virtual Trips, Find or Make Your Own Field Trip, Yahoo Virtual Field Trips, Videoconferencing, Google Earth
Use video or computer images as the stimulus for the information:
Power Media Plus, United Streaming, Vidipedia, You Tube, Teacher Tube
Teacher created examples using both a linguistic and nonlinguistic piece:

Use current events to help make the terms applicable to something familiar to the students:

Demos for math and science - check out the samples made for different math and science courses
Math demos for all grade levels
Math manipulatives for elementary grades
Use a photo editing software such as iPhoto (Macintosh users), Photo Story (PC Windows XP users), or
Picasa from Google (PC or Mac user) to demonstrate a term for the students in a slideshow - Photo Story and Picasa
are FREE downloads, iPhoto is part of the software for a Macintosh computer



Step 2. The student restates the description of the term in their own words.

Step 3. The student creates a nonlinguistic representation of the term.

Step 4. Periodically have the students do activities that help them add to their knowledge of the term.


Compare terms - using a Venn diagram, see Compare and/ or Contrast organizer in list
Classify terms
- give a list of terms to students and have them classify the terms into categories
- give categories to students and have them place the terms into the given categories
Solve analogy problems - see Analogies organizer in list

5. Periodically have the students discuss the terms with one another.
